National Sailing Hall Of Fame Announces The Sailing Museum
Newport, R.I. USA: The National Sailing Hall of Fame announced today that its new home will be named The Sailing Museum, offering an innovative multi-media experience dedicated to celebrating sailing’s heritage, showcasing its heroes and inspiring generations of sailors to come.
Situated in the historic Armory building on the waterfront in downtown Newport, The Sailing Museum will feature more than 11,000 square feet of interactive exhibits, displays chronicling the history of the sport, and galleries honoring inductees into the National Sailing Hall of Fame and the America’s Cup Hall of Fame. The Sailing Museum experience has been developed by Healy Kohler Design, a recognized leader in interactive museum and sports hall of fame design. The museum is scheduled to open in Spring 2022.
The heart of The Sailing Museum will be galleries for the National Sailing Hall of Fame and the America’s Cup Hall of Fame, honoring the achievements and commitment to excellence of those men and women who have contributed to the sport of sailing at the highest levels. Like Hall of Famers from across the sports world, these sailing stars undergo a rigorous and competitive nomination and selection process to earn this honor.
In addition to the Halls of Fame, The Sailing Museum will feature a mix of high- and low-tech interactive exhibits with built-in “stealth learning” components that share the principles of sailing and provide seasoned sailors with opportunities to test their skills and knowledge.

Organizers for the Bermuda Gold Cup, the Royal Bermuda Yacht Club’s $100,000 match racing regatta, have set Aug. 31 as the deadline to decide whether this year’s event, the planned 70th competition for the King Edward VII Trophy, will take place.
The Bermuda Gold Cup, presented by Argo Group for the benefit of the Bermuda Institute of Ocean Sciences (BIOS), is scheduled Oct. 25-30. The event of the World Match Racing Tour had been scheduled in May until the novel coronavirus COVID-19 forced the closing of Bermuda’s L.F. Wade International Airport in March as Bermuda’s government prohibited non-residents from entering the island. A field of 16 crews, between 65 and 70 sailors, is planned in addition to other personnel, both local and international.
“Our primary concern is the safety and health of the participants, the Club members and staff, Bermudians as a whole, and of course we defer to the Bermuda Government and their health experts to help frame those standards and protocols,” said regatta chairperson Leatrice Oatley in a letter addressed to competitors. “We have decided that Aug. 31 will be our BGC ‘Go/No-Go’ date to make a decision based on the COVID criteria.”
The criteria being monitored relate to travel, both globally as well as to and from Bermuda, quarantining, both in a competitor’s home country and in Bermuda, testing availability, local boating restrictions with regards to social distancing and accommodations.

At one end of the scale are the money-no-object speed machines. At the other end are docile cruising cats heavily laden with furniture, equipment and domestic systems. It’s almost a binary choice, but in the middle of the multihull performance spectrum one brand stands alone. Outremer has built a unique reputation as the only major catamaran builder that offers a balanced compromise between these two extremes.
It wasn’t always that way. Most builders started off in the 1980s making cats that were fast, comfortable and fun, aimed at experienced sailors who wanted to cruise long distances and win a few races, too.
Paris 2024 Olympic Sailing hopefuls and Ireland’s ‘Total Produce’ partner up for Round Ireland Yacht Race

Irish offshore sailors Conor Fogerty and Susan Glenny have announced their two handed entry, “Total Produce” to the challenging SSE Renewables Round Ireland Sailing Race which will commence on the 22nd August 2020 from Wicklow. The 704 nautical mile race around Ireland from Wicklow to Wicklow was postponed in June due to Covid 19 and is now scheduled to go ahead in August.
Conor and Susan have been sailing together since 2018 and this will be their second joint entry to the Round Ireland Race
Last year it was announced that mixed pairs offshore keelboat racing would be a new Olympic class at the Paris 2024 Olympics and from inception Conor and Susan have expressed their intention to qualify to represent Ireland in 2024.
For the Round Ireland Race the pair will race aboard their state of the art foiling Beneteau Figaro 3 race yacht, “Total Produce.”. The 35 ft Yacht was the first IRC foiling boat in Ireland and is one of a selection of yachts that could be used for the 2024 Olympic event.
Conor Fogerty from Howth was Afloat Sailor of the year in 2017 and Glenny who’s family are from Kilkerly, Louth is the highest scoring female skipper in the RORC global offshore sailing series 2019. Both are extremely experienced offshore sailors with over 35 transatlantic crossings between them.
Don Street Celebrates 90th Birthday At the Dragon Derby at GHYC

Don is the oldest helm by far in the fleet at Glandore and his Dragon built in 1937 is also the oldest dragon by far sailing the GHYC fleet.

European Tour of The Ocean Race Confirmed by Richard Brisius
The start of The Ocean Race is postponed to October 2022, due to the Covid-19 pandemic. While announcing a new 10 year plan, plans for a European tour of the toughest race around the world are already being considered half of July.
Steffie Plomp from Zeilhelden (Sailingheroes), had an interview with Richard Brisius, chairman of The Ocean Race, who officially confirmed the European tour for 2021.
Besides the start of the European Tour in 2021, Brisius told us that this event may be open to other classes than the VO65 and IMOCA 60. “Let us know when you are watching what this race should be about and what you want to see in The Ocean Race Europe” Brisius said.
“With short offshore legs between European cities the tour will be a bit of a festival format”it will be a good preparation period for teams and organizers. For host cities and sponsors the European circuit will be attractive as well.
Rolex Big Boat Series on Hold Until 2021
Due to the ongoing global pandemic, the 2020 Rolex Big Boat Series hosted by St. Francis Yacht Club in San Francisco, California, has been canceled.
The premiere West Coast regatta draws sailors from around the country and was scheduled for September 17–20, 2020, with four days of racing for invited one-design classes, ORR boats greater than 30 feet and a Classics division for boats built prior to 1955 and at least 48 feet in length.
The event was also to serve as the J/88 North American Championships and the Express 37 Pacific Coast Championships.
The next Rolex Big Boat Series is scheduled for September 15-19, 2021.
Rolex Swan Cup
Nautor’s Swan is delighted to announce that the 2020 edition of the beloved Rolex Swan Cup will be taking place 7 to 13 September, organized by Yacht Club Costa Smeralda (YCCS) in the stunning yachting hub of Porto Cervo, Sardinia.
Over 60 competing yachts, Nautor’s Swan, the YCCS and its longstanding partner Rolex will come together in a convivial atmosphere for the “Celebration of the Sea” theme over the week-long festivities, which marks the 21st edition of the event.
The regatta – the second of the 2020 Mediterranean season and one of the largest set to take place this year – will be carried out in full respect of the Italian Government’s guidelines for the safety and health of all participants. In keeping with the “double soul” racing/cruising spirit of Nautor’s Swan, the competition will span seven classes from both the classic and modern eras of the brand’s far-reaching history, while a number of fun and engaging post-race activities related to the “Celebration of the Sea” theme will take place over the course of the week.
The Rolex Swan Cup’s seven classes will include the Swan Maxi Class (vessels of 60 feet and above), Swan Grand Prix Class (vessels below 60 feet), the historic Sparkman & Stephens Class, and the Swan One Design Classes (including for the ClubSwan 36, ClubSwan 42, Swan 45 and ClubSwan 50 fleets).

The new virtual London boat show, set to take place in January 2021, has been postponed.
Organisers Beryl Chalmers and Andy Beharrell, say the general uncertainty in the marine industry together with severe economic problems caused by the Covid-19 pandemic have led to the decision.
“Companies from boat builders to electronics to chandlery and charterers have had a very hard time this year with virtually no income,” said Andy. “It’s hard to take on a new concept in that sort of scenario.
“Without exception, all potential exhibitors were very positive about the idea of a virtual show and most said they would be interested in a show for 2022. Spending money in this current climate was difficult.”
The show was to have been organised with an Earls Court backdrop, resurrecting the look and feel of the London Boat Show pre-Excel days. It had been planned to run it as a social enterprise.
And he explained he is now planning to organise a virtual cruising conference in the Spring which again will be a social enterprise raising funds to help disabled people to go sailing.
The UK’s Bainbridge International, one of the world’s oldest sailcloth and hardware manufacturers, has announced a management buy-out and restructure.
According to a statement released today, managing director Andrew Smith has acquired the company with the help of outside investment and the support of the management team.
The restructure sees the retirement of Jan O’Connor, who has been with the business for over 12 years and the owner for the last six years. Gavin Lacey will remain as the company’s commercial director.
Laurence Mead, who provided the investment for the acquisition, joins the board as non-executive chairman.
Andrew Smith has been with Bainbridge for six years, bringing with him a wealth of experience in textiles in general, and sail-making in particular, both technically and practically. He has been instrumental in returning the company to its roots as a sailcloth and fabric specialist.
Established in 1917, Bainbridge is one of the world’s oldest sailcloth and hardware manufacturers.
Alongside the sailcloth, Bainbridge says it plans to continue to develop and invest in their AquaMarine brand along with the supply of a wide range of marine products. In the UK Bainbridge already distributes a wide range of brands for the marine aftermarket and OEMs.
Celebrated bluewater sailor and author Larry Pardey has died. He was 81.
The Canadian-born Pardey and his wife Lin garnered fame after they built a 24-foot Lyle Hess sailboat and sailed it around the world while writing about their experiences. They spent a good chunk of their adult lives sailing the globe in both directions, logging more than 200,000 miles and becoming celebrities in the cruising community.
After 11 years, they built a larger Lyle Hess sailboat and continued their travels. Neither boat had an engine. They eventually made their base on Kawau Island off the coast of New Zealand's North Island.
In recent years, Pardey suffered from Parkinson's and Parkinsonian dementia. He had been confined to a rest home in New Zealand since suffering a stroke last year.
